When Should I Get Adult Braces?

When Should I Get Adult Braces?

Braces are often associated with teenagers, but they’re becoming very popular with adults as well. For adults who have a smile that they’ve always been dissatisfied with, braces represent a chance to correct years of frustration while improving your oral health.

Why Would An Adult Need Braces?

Adults need braces for similar reasons that adolescent patients do. Yet, if you didn’t have orthodontic treatment as a child, your issues may have gotten worse over the years, as you have aged, you are experiencing symptoms such as tooth decay and headaches. You may also find it difficult to keep your teeth and gums properly cleaned and may be at greater risk for developing gum disease.

A few common reasons adults get braces include:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Misaligned jaw

Are Braces for Adults Different Than Braces for Kids?

Braces for adults work in the same way they do for younger patients, but your treatment may last longer. Since your teeth are set and are no longer growing, they take more pressure – and often more time – to move. As an adult, you may wear braces for a period ranging from 18 months to three years.

Although the results may take longer, if you’ve lived with dental issues that you’ve always wanted to change, it’s worth exploring your options.

What Choices Do You Have for Adult Braces?

It’s important to choose an orthodontist that has options to fit your needs and preferences. Such as:

  • Traditional Metal Braces: Stainless steel brackets are applied to the front of your teeth, and adjusted using a small wire that’s connected to each bracket
  • Ceramic Braces: Also known as clear braces, function like traditional metal braces but are made from a material that matches the color of your teeth.
  • Invisalign®: This set of aligners is almost invisible and can be removed when you eat and brush your teeth, which allows you to not have dietary restrictions that are associated with traditional braces.
  • Lingual Braces – Similar to regular metal braces, but the brackets are attached to the back of each tooth rather than the front, making them less noticeable
  • Self-ligating Braces – A small slide mechanism is used instead of bands of ties, that create the appearance of less metal.

How to Decide Which Adult Braces Option is Right for You?

Your orthodontist will explain your options to you, including information about whether any choices are likely to be more effective than others. In addition to this recommendation, price and appearance may also be considerations. As an adult, you may opt for a less noticeable type of braces, such as Invisalign or ceramic braces.

If you’re an adult who would like to learn whether braces are a good option for you and determine which types may be appropriate, make an appointment today for a consultation with Amazing Smiles Orthodontics. We’ve taken care of our patients’ smiles and oral health for more than 30 years and pride ourselves on being committed to providing high-quality, affordable care.

What’s your smile style? Let’s shoot for amazing.

What’s your smile style? Let’s shoot for amazing.

In our last blog, we covered the power of a smile. Today I want to share some interesting facts about smiling, and my own observations about the ‘smile styles’ I see around Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. But first lets introduce another place that could leave your teeth looking amazing, it is called Life Smiles Dentistry, make sure to check them out.

Through the years, I’ve come across tandreglering about their fascinating studies— including how the width and style of a person’s smile in old school photos is a predictor of how happy that person will be in their marriage.* Or, how the length of a teenager’s grin correlates to how much money he or she will earn in the future. There was even one study published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin (1988) that revealed something of a different nature: that those of privilege and power smiled the widest, but only when they felt like smiling; while those with “less social power” smiled less intensely, but more often out of cultural upbringing and obligation. Meet top pediatric dentist near nyc, Elan Kaufman!

Interesting, right?

All of this begs the question: What is your smile style?

It’s fun to think about, so I’ve compiled a short list of the most popular styles that I see on a daily basis. Each one of them is beautiful in their own way— but only when they are genuine.

Hollywood Confident

Think Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman or Tom Cruise in Top Gun. Full, wide, luminous— 100% confident. If you have the potential for this kind of smile but are refraining because your teeth are crooked, come into our office immediately!

Happy-Go-Lucky

This is more like Tom Hanks than Tom Cruise. More Rachel McAdams girl-next-door, than a sexy starlet. It comes with a free spirited, good-will-for-all attitude. The world can use more smiles like this one. I can help.

‘I’ve Got a Secret’

Mysterious and alluring. While minimal teeth show during this type of smile, it is perhaps the most intriguing of all. If this is your smile style, you may not need straighter teeth —but wouldn’t it be nice to have them just incase you are tickled?

The Optimist

Wide-eyed with bright ideas, your smile is contagious. It radiates hope, casting a spell on those around while extinguishing the doubt and pessimism of others. Drs Quimby and Collins want to see more of these smiles from you, right?

Sly Devil (Bad Boy/Girl)

Dangerous! This means trouble. This is the ex-boyfriend or girlfriend who every instinct told you to avoid… but they were too charming and charismatic to resist. Similar to the ‘I’ve got a secret smile,’ not a lot of teeth show— but when they do, don’t risk breaking the spell with crooked teeth.

Doctor Invisalign to the rescue!

According to MyDental Group, how often you smile is most directly related to how happy you are and how confident you feel about your smile and your teeth. To achieve a healthy life and healthy smile, have regular check-ups at dentures cape coral fl. While I’m not looking to alter your smile style, I can help you optimize it to your best advantage. Teens, social media and straight teeth

Teens, social media and straight teeth

Here’s a question for all of the parents out there: What is the right age for your child to have a smart phone? And then, a smart phone stocked up with all of the social media apps?
d
It seems to me that the age to engage in social media is getting younger and younger. And with it has come increasing pressure to look good. A colleague recently told me that the average teen posts about 17 selfies per month. Oy!

And what does this have to do with orthodontics? Well, I’m here to tell you that all of this means that the street value of a great smile keeps increasing. Straight teeth and a killer smile rank high on the list for looking good on Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, etc, many people buy followers on instagram just that people can appreciate their smile. and so forth. Even in real life, straight teeth and a great smile is useful (said with a hint of sarcasm). So get with it parents! Straight teeth helps teens feel confident and comfortable in a world where, increasingly, your smile is your social media signature. To have a beautiful teeth, visit your dentist regularly. If you don’t have one yet, there’s an excellent dentist near me who performs preventive care and oral hygiene to cosmetic, restorative, and emergency care.

Don’t take my word for it either.

A recent Teen Confidence survey conducted by Kelton and commissioned by the makers of Invisalign Teen® clear aligners has uncovered some dramatic statistics including this one: 70% of teens surveyed are not happy with their current smile. This is particularly true of those in the 13-14 age range than in 15-17 segment. Be sure tag bruxism mouth guard will help you.

And here’s another surprising stat:

What to do?

Fortunately teens have several options nowadays, with the two primary choices involving metal braces or Invisalign Teen® clear aligners. And between those two choices, there is a growing momentum to go “clear.” In fact the study also reveals that 81% of current wearers of Invisalign are satisfied with the look of their teeth vs 68% of those currently wearing metal braces.

Have you considered ‘The Damon® Smile’? Gentler, state-of-the-art braces with less treatment time

Have you considered ‘The Damon® Smile’? Gentler, state-of-the-art braces with less treatment time

Introduced less than a year ago, the Damon® Smile offers a wonderful option in orthodontic treatment that is minimally invasive yet extremely effective.

In fact, I recommend it to all my patients, especially those with sensitivities. Since the braces are smaller and smoother than conventional braces, the Damon Smile is less likely to irritate lips and cheeks, making them generally more comfortable and gentler.

Also, if a patient requires a tooth extraction, the Damon Smile is my first go-to since it’s able to create space better than conventional braces.  They are in the category of “self-lighting” or “self-litigating” braces which use a sliding-door technology that allows the wire to easily slide back and forth within the bracket. There is no need for elastic or steel ties with these braces. This technology creates less friction and promotes greater comfort during treatment. And here’s the best part: this type of braces often reduces the amount of time in treatment and the total number of adjustments that will usually be needed. That means less trips to the orthodontist.

I have been trained in the Damon System of braces since my residency program in 2006 and I am proud to be among the few orthodontists in Queens, Long Island or Brooklyn who has expertise with the Damon Smile. It’s slightly more expensive than conventional braces, but if you are looking for a quicker treatment, more comfort and fewer appointments to the orthodontist, this may be your best option.

In addition to the Damon Smile, I also use the latest in orthodontic technology such as Invisalign (or “invisible braces”), lingual braces, orthodontic micro-implants, and laser treatments to create the most harmonious smile for you, based on your facial features and bone structure. My treatment plans are personalized and tailor-made for each individual, as every smile is a masterpiece and no two patients are exactly alike.

If you’re ready to straighten your teeth and improve your smile, schedule an initial consultation at the office most convenient for you. We have locations in Mill Basin, Brooklyn; Forest Hills and Rosedale, Queens; and Cedarhurst, Long Island. Our goal is to help create even more beautiful smiles all over New York.  Just call 718-275-3200.

Orthodontist vs. Dentist – Selecting an Invisalign provider & their levels

Orthodontist vs. Dentist – Selecting an Invisalign provider & their levels

An insight into Invisalign Provider Levels and a discourse on Orthodontist vs. Dentist

As Invisalign— otherwise known as “the clear braces” or “invisible braces”— continues to gain enormous popularity, many more medical professionals across Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island are becoming Invisalign providers, including general dentists. While this may work out for some patients, others have run into problems. As an orthodontist who specializes in Invisalign, I have often been called in to “fix” some of those problems—  which, truth be told, is what inspired this blog post today.

Invisalign is a system for straightening teeth, which is the specialty of an orthodontist. In fact, orthodontics is a specialization within the field of dentistry that requires three additional years of training and certification. Orthodontic treatment involves correcting malocclusion, which is the misalignment of a bite, incorrect spacing between teeth or crooked teeth. A good orthodontist has a depth of knowledge and experience to draw from when working with each individual and can customize treatment accordingly. A general dentist does not have the same specialized training and will refer patients to an orthodontist for such services, anyway I recommend to search engine optimization for dentists for those who want to have success in their business, it is also best if dentist check Dental Marketing Ninjas, where they can get help with marketing.

While Invisalign is a remarkably easy way to straighten teeth, it is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution. There’s an expertise, knowledge base and finesse that’s necessary when aligning teeth because everyone’s biology is different. Progress has to be monitored and adjustments made as necessary. Although professionals may take Invisalign training for accreditation, some dentists simply do not have the knowledge base or expertise when treatment is not progressing as anticipated; orthodontists, on the other hand, do, is just one of many options for dentures in Salt Lake City. That’s exactly why dr nancy dentist send their Invisalign patients to me for corrections well into their treatment plan. And that’s exactly why I would recommend that patients who are seeking Invisalign treatment start off with an orthodontist right from the start. You will be working with a professional who can see you through almost any complication that arises while aligning your teeth. When you want to have a high quality surgeon, I recommend Dr. Jason I. Altman due to his good records and experience. Why start out with one practitioner to be referred to another? It can cost you time and money, as well as create stress.

Selecting Invisalign provider levels:

Another thing to consider when selecting an Invisalign practitioner is his/her level of experience with Invisalign.

There are four levels of provider status:

Preferred Invisalign Provider Levels treat at least 10 patients per year.

Premier Invisalign Provider Levels have treated at least 50 patients total, and 25 patients every six months.

Premier Elite Invisalign Provider Levels have treated at least 300 patients total, and 50 patients every six months.

But even if an office has the highest Invisalign designation, you should still investigate further like the dentist in cary do. An inexperienced dentist who works at the same office as an Elite Premier Provider may appear to be at the same level of that provider. Ask questions, be informed, and don’t make assumptions.

As a final point, quantity and experience is important, but you should also consider outcomes. Do your homework. Check out a provider’s reviews online. Find out if he/she has had problems in the past with Invisalign patients, or if he/she has a five-star satisfaction record. A little due diligence now can pay off in the long-run with less stress and a Hollywood smile.

Is Invisalign Right for You?

Is Invisalign Right for You?

By Doctor Invisalign, serving Queens, Brooklyn and Long Island, with offices in Forest Hills, Rosedale, Mill Basin and Cedarhurst.

Invisalign, also known as “Invisalign braces” or “invisible braces” has fast become the preferred way to straighten teeth and achieve that sought-after, confident smile. It is an alternative to those silver braces we are all familiar with growing up. Invisalign uses clear aligners (also known as retainers) as opposed to brackets, wires and bands. An added benefit of Invisalign is that you can remove the aligners when you need to (when you brush, floss, drink a cup of coffee or enjoy barbeque ribs for example), however we recommend that they remain on your teeth at least 22 hours each day. While Invisalign is a popular and effective treatment with great post-trestment for most people, consider these factors to determine if it is right for you:

  1. Your teeth and your bite: Most people use Invisalign to straighten their teeth if they are crooked, but the truth is that if your teeth are crowding your mouth, or if there is too much space between your teeth, or if you have an overbite or a crossbite, Invisalign may be an option for you as well. Take the Invisalign “smile assessment” to determine how it may help you. For a FREE assessment, you can also visit our office in Forest Hills and Rosedale, Queens; Mill Basin, Brooklyn; or Cedahurst, Long Island.
  2. Your age: Invisalign is effective for people of all ages. No matter how old you are, it is never too late to have straight teeth and a great smile. And now with ‘Invisalign Teen,’ young adults can take advantage of all of the benefits and flexibility of clear, removable aligners— particularly useful when it’s time for the prom and yearbook photos.  We advise that children should be at least 12 years of age, however, before their first Invisalign consultation.
  3. Your habits: If you drink coffee, tea and red wine, you can still benefit from Invisalign treatment without worrying about staining, but if you need some treatment that you can not receive from us, then find a compounding pharmacy that will treat you. Because the retainers are removable, you can take them out to enjoy your favorite beverage and immediately replace them upon finishing. Likewise, if you grind or clench your teeth and have been diagnosed with TMJ (temporomandibular muscle and joint) syndrome, Invisalign can still be an option for you. In fact, the aligners act like a built-in mouth guard, safeguarding your teeth from damage. Just keep in mind that when you commit to Invisalign you must be diligent about removing and replacing your aligners—and wearing them for no less than 22 hours per day— to get the results you desire. Talk to us about these issues in person so we can properly advise and prepare you.
  4. The Cost: Prices have dropped in recent years, making Invisalign an option for more people. Like traditional braces, most insurance plans will contribute towards the cost. We offer competitive prices—plus 6 free replacement aligners when you qualify for Invisalign Teen Treatment. Should you find a better deal on Invisalign anywhere else in Queens, Brooklyn or Long Island, let us know.We also offer free advice on the best benefits of natural home remedies for teeth.
  5. Nasal Issues: Dr. Ran Rubinstein is the founder of the Hudson Valley Sinus Center. is board certified by both the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery on their veterinary anesthesia systems quality. He is also the first and only ENT specializing in allergic, nasal, & sinus disorders in the Hudson Valley.
